A Perceptual Quality Model for Adaptive VoIP Applications∗

چکیده
Quality models predict the perceptual quality of services as they calculate subjective ratings from measured parameters. In this paper we present a new quality model that evaluates VoIP telephone calls in order to control their transmission at run-time. In addition to packet loss rate, coding mode and delay it takes into account the impairments due to changes in the transmission con guration (e.g. switching the coding mode or re-scheduling the playout time). It is also computation e cient and open source. To demonstrate its potential, we apply our model to select the ideal coding and packet rate in bandwidthlimited environments. Furthermore we decide, based on model predictions, whether to delay the playout of speech frames after delay spikes. Delay spikes often occur after congestion and cause packets to arrive too late. We show a considerable improvement in perceptual speech quality if our model is applied.

متن کاملExploring the Extent and Impact of Playout Adjustments within VoIP Applications on the MOS Scale
In coping with best-effort service, many VoIP applications employ adaptive playout strategies. Objective methods of speech quality assessment such as the ITU-T Recommendation P.862 (also known as Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality PESQ) typically do not capture distortion due to playout adjustments as they match up short segments prior to analysis. Similarly, the ITU-T E-Model does not cap...
متن کاملDeveloping Fuzzy Models for Estimating the Quality of VoIP
This paper presents a novel method for modeling the one-way quality prediction of VoIP, non-intrusively. Intrusive measures of voice quality suffer from common deficiency that is the need of reference signal for evaluating the quality of voice. Owing to this lack, a great deal of effort has been recently devoted for modeling voice quality prediction non-intrusively according to quality degradat...
متن کاملNew Methods for Voice Quality Evaluation for IP Networks
The need to evaluate voice quality in VoIP (Voice over IP) applications is an important requirement for technical and commercial reasons. This may involve subjective and/or objective voice quality measurements, but existing methods may not always be appropriate for VoIP applications. The aims of the study reported in the paper are to investigate new subjective and objective measurement methods ...
متن کاملQoE Assessment of VoIP in Next Generation Networks
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services are currently present in our personal and professional activities and will be key services in Next Generation Networks (NGN). Hence, in order to keep and attract new customers, the quality of delivery for VoIP services needs to be measured and optimized to ensure Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support to users in future ...
